Ultimaker 2 vs. Replicator 2
Ultimaker produces the 3D Printer Ultimaker 2. It looks very good in theory, but how does it compare with the market leader? The new printer costs near 2000$ and the price of the original Ultimaker has been reduced to almost 1000$.
The Replicator 2 costs about 2000$ too. The new Ultimaker 2 is more reliable, faster and quieter than their previous model and it is able to make bigger objects without increasing its size. The size of the printer is 338 x 258 x 389 mm. The build volume is 230 x 225 x 205 mm. The speed can go from 30 to 300 mm/s and the quality is up to 20 microns (0.02 mm).
The Makerbot Replicator 2 size is 490 x 320 x 380 mm which is approximately two-thirds bigger than the Ultimaker 2.
However, the build volume is 285 x 153 x 155 mm and the precision can reach 100 microns. It means that the new Ultimaker 2 can create pieces 50% bigger in volume than the Replicator 2. It does also with a higher precision. Something that must not be forgotten is that the Ultimaker 2 is fully open source.
